WANT TO JOIN THE LAB?
Graduate Students (MSc and PhD)
To learn more about the graduate programs at the UPLB, please visit the UPLB Graduate School website and read carefully the guidelines for admission. Graduate students in our laboratory may engage in basic and applied malacological research with important biological or conservation impacts. Research may be conducted in the lab or field or both. What is most important is a strong motivation to do scientific research.
Before applying, prospective students should contact the laboratory head (ERC de Chavez) with a brief description of your research interests, experiences, and career goals. Please include a copy of your latest curriculum vitae. Eligible prospective students are encouraged to apply for the DOST-ASTHRDP Scholarship (for regular fulltime students) or the CHED Faculty Development Program (for SUC or HEI faculty), or any available scholarship grant.
For more information, read the prospectus in the Animal Biology Division website.
Undergraduate Students (BS Biology)
On their second year (2nd semester), BS Biology students with at least 76 units already earned at the UPLB are required to choose one of the eight majors offered in the IBS. Members of the lab usually come from the BS Biology Major in Zoology or Ecology or Systematics Program. During application, you can indicate Dr. ERC de Chavez as your preferred adviser, for you to have a better chance of being considered.
We welcome students to just feel what it’s like to do research in our lab if interested in a topic that we study. Prior research experience is not required but at least students are expected to have already taken ZOO 14 (University Zoology) and BIO 150 (Ecology). What is most important is a strong motivation to do scientific research. We will try to provide support for students at every stage, from proposal writing, to applying for research funding (thesis topic aligned with the current research project of the lab is always funded), to the actual conduct of the study, until possible publication of the research output. Students will be guided thoroughly not only by the lab head, but also by the senior lab students.
